Ok well, then here is another Abbasid Dirham. This one is from AH 142 (759/760 AD). The mint is al-Basra and the attribution is A-213.1. It was issued by al-Mansur, who has been said to have founded Baghdad. We've had a pretty good run these past several weeks with the Abbasid Caliphate, but I would be quite happy to let some other civilization share in the limelight. Otherwise, starting tomorrow we will fall back a decade and focus on the 740s. I should point out at this time that this is my oldest Abbasid coin. Considering that this caliphate was founded in AH 132 (about 750 AD), that shouldn't be too surprising. I do have some coins of the Umayyad Caliphate (which preceded the Abbasids), but am hoping for some wider participation from CCF!

And so, we can pass through the 740's with our first Umayyad Caliphate dirham. While superficially similar to the later Abbasids (especially with regard to the use of Kufic script), some of the verses of the Koran are different. This one is dated AH 122 (740 AD) and was minted in Wasit. While anonymous, we can ascribe this to Hisham's reign (724-743 AD). It is attributed as Album 137. On to the 730's!

Ok well good @turtlefoot and @january1may. I think that I can get us close to the 600s, but then I have some pretty significant holes. It'll be great to get some wider participation!

Actually, now that I think of it, I have a few Arab-Byzantines that should be 7th century. But I hadn't posted them for identification yet, so I don't know from what period they actually are - and in any case they probably won't be dated particularly narrowly.

@january1may, ok well please post if you can attribute one of your coins into an upcoming decade. In the meanwhile, here is another Umayyad dirham. This one is dated AH 121, which corresponds to 738/739 AD. It was minted in Wasit under the authority of Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik. I have it attributed as Album 137.

Moving along to the decade of the 720s... Here is another dirham of the Umayyad Caliphate. It is dated AH 105, which corresponds to 723/724 AD. It was also made at Wasit, but during the reign of Yazid II. The attribution is Album 135. Starting tomorrow am, we are moving on to the decade of the 710s. I'd love to see some Byzantines or whatever else you have in your collection that can be attributed to that decade!

I wish someone had updated the title -- I would have posted my 730s dinar.

@arkie, ok sorry about that. If I could update the title myself, then I would but I can't. I would be quite happy for you to bring us back one decade for the moment if you'd like to post your coin too. Then we are still looking for a coin from the 710s.

Really great coin with noticably different Kufic script. @arkie, do you know where it was minted?

Moving along to the decade of the 710s... Here is another dirham of the Umayyad Caliphate. It is dated AH 99, which corresponds to roughly 718 AD. It was also made at Damascus (Syria). The attribution is Album 131. Now we are ready to move backwards to the decade of the 700s. Anyone have a coin to post? I'm all done contributing for a few decades.
