my son was out doing some metal detecting. he found a 1903 king Edwards the VII penny in some granular soil. if it were you would you clean this coin or leave it as is?

It will do no harm to clean it. It already has environmental damage... pretty neat find.

I would not clean it at all. it's in nice condition ,leave it.

I would clean the coin, it's not old enough to warrant not cleaning it, still a neat way to find it

Whenever I find a copper coin while metal detecting, I use penetrating oil. I get a plastic container put a couple of inches of oil in and drop the coin in for a few weeks and then use soft toothbrush to clean off whatever is left. DO NOT rub the dirt on the coin, this will just add scratches to it.
