This crack in the collar is well noted in "error books",... ..and the raised line is easily seen here.

...but what would cause the fine striations on each side of that crack..?

Would the ejection process possibly add these fines lines..?

Just wondering how this might happen ..?

If anyone has any other examples of Vicky die coller crack cents ..please post them here..

Could it be caused by metal flow or possible slight movement of the collar?

With just the pictures in the OP it look's somewhat flat on each side as if it was filed down.
I'd like to see more pictures but from an angle that shows the contour of the rim.

Cheers, Bill

Thanks for the feedback..greatly appreciated..

For now....this is all that I have that show the rim at an angle..

Can't see any file marks ,..but maybe a few normal rim bumps might cause the flatter areas,..or maybe that's how the crack was progressing and possibly spreading out..

Take note that there are more than one raised line in that group of lines.,..it's just that the main raised line is much more noticeable..and now easier to see with this tilted view.. The collar crack probably initiated at the highest strongest central line..

Seems like any contacts would cause a raised area to go a bit flat with any impact....

It's the interesting striations and/or flow lines that keeps me guessing here..

I've just never noticed this type of collar crack or fine lines in the rim before on these large cents..(Alan Herbert's book explains the American cents variety very well)

so....

Check your large cent Vickies and post your collar cracks ..please..!!

Thanks fourmack... I don't have that many Vicky cents ..when compared to some of the "super sleuths" that are often here.

I'm really hoping to see more "Vicky collar crack" cents..from the heavy collectors in this group..

Maybe this error would fit into the "few and far between".. The experts will have to pipe in here ....

I've never looked at the edge of my nearly 5,000 Vickies that I've owned. I'll look at some when I get a breather. b

Now Dan,..I was waiting for that question..

Rob would also be able to nail this one.. and probably only seen in the 59..as another key marker for the #1..

I was hoping/expecting to see a few other collar crack Vickies also..

...but ..

Remember my OP question ..

Could you give me your expert opinion (or anyone else here) on the "how and why" of the striations on each side of that raised crack..?
I would like to better understand the reason for those lines.

Thanks all..!!
