So I came across this 1821 half on ebay, it appears to be an early die state O-101, but it has what appears to be a die crack running though the date... Has anyone ever seen that on this variety before? Or is it not a die crack? This one has me puzzled.    |

Nothing in my Overton or Peterson book for a die crack at that location for o.101 or o.101a.

Maybe it is just my old eyes ..
but if you follow what looks like a die crack to the rim,
it looks like it continues off the coin.
I am thinking there might be a hair inside the 2X2.

its not a hair. A hair would go over the 1 not skip it entirely

This one is curious.
It certainly looks like a hair to the left of the coin running across the plastic of the holder onto the coin, but then it does not cover the last 1 on the date.

In the first photo you can see the line continue off the coin, I think its in the plastic.

 even in the close-up you can see it traverse the 1, just with reduced clarity because of the lighting difference, I presume. (I.e. hair pressed against 1 & plastic, while leaving shadow over the field) |

I agree it is a hair. Makes me laugh though as just the other day I was looking at an 1864 2 cent piece of mine that I hadn't looked at in a while. I clearly saw an extra leaf on the reverse between the top of the right wheat leaves and the "S" and "O". I really thought I had something special. Then I blew on it and the leaf disappeared! I guess it was a little hair or something else that perfectly matched a wheat leaf in color and shape. Oh well!
