1998 UK 50 pence coin commemorating the 50th anniversary of the National Health Service. This was also the first year that British coins showed the more mature portrait of the Queen designed by Ian Rank-Broadley.

As we get back in time, the number of coins per year declines.

1997 UK £2 - the first bimetallic £2 coin. This is the only £2 coin with the Maklouf bust of the Queen. Owing to various production problems, it did not enter circulation until mid-1998, and was quite elusive for a while, which has led to many people wrongly assuming that it's rare and valuable - look on ebay for people trying to sell them for grossly inflated sums!
