1942 S Varieties Are There 3 Styles Of Mint Mark Or 2?

Crazyb0 Rest in Peace 10197 Posts	Posted 05/11/2017 5:10 pm I seem to think so, they call them serif and ball serif, but you have what appears to be a serif/serif...not sure if that's the case or not...on 41S cents there's 3, ball, serif and small "s", that I know. Report this Post to the Staff

3193zd Valued Member United States 292 Posts	Posted 05/11/2017 5:29 pm The middle one is the one I haven't seen listed before. Also look at the inside circle opening on the top part of the S it is different in the middle one. My understanding from variety vistas is the first one pictured is the straight serifs and the last one is the trumpet tail. So the middle one has a trumpet tail but the whole top S is different in and out. Report this Post to the Staff

jay4202472000 Pillar of the Community United States 853 Posts	Posted 05/12/2017 4:21 pm Yes there are 3. MMS-001 (Small), MMS-002 (Trumpet), & MMS-003 (Straight Serif). Coin 1 is MMS-003, Coin 3 is MMS-002, but I swear Coin 2 looks like a Ball Serif S (MMS-004) which wasn't used until 1944. As said above, it could be a trumpet tail with a hit to the upper serif, but it sure looks like a ball serif. I don't think the MMS-004 was used on any coin until 1944.
