EF-30/35Nice coin, even wear, but micro nicks take a higher grade away. Give it a bath to rid the gunk!

Overall weaker strike. F15 maybe 20. Wheat stalks don't have complete lines. Not sure if a TPG would give this a 'details' grade because of all the nicks and the dig in his cheek. |

Been working on a 1909-1958 Wheat cent set since I was a kid, and a seller I follow was having 10-50% off all Wheat cents, so I picked up all the coins I posted here (+1925-S, 1929-S not shown, and 3 other 1920s D mints) for under $40 with $3.99 ship. From another seller I scored 18 1910-1930 Wheaties for under $10 w/shipping, all of which look G-VG+, a couple cleaned. My set is complete 1935-1958, all pulled from circulation over the last 25+ years, I still need the SVDB, 22 no d, and 1914-D as well. I also have a 2nd short set complete 1945-1958, all AU+/BU RB and RD coins. "Why" - because a lot of my early Wheat cents -- pulled from circulation and my dad's collection when I was a kid -- are culls, cleaned (by me! oops!) and otherwise have major issues like holes and gouges. The shiny cleaned red worn coins and the holed, corroded coins don't look good in a Dansco with nice average circulated cents. Interesting , but have you ever thought about putting together a high grade circulated set 1909- 1958 all mints.  |

T-BOP, I'm not passionate about Wheat cents the way I am about, say, Morgans or Washington quarters, but I do appreciate the value in a nice XF-AU set. The problem is that I'm on a pretty limited budget these days and XF-AU for many of the dates (09S, 09SVDB, the early teens D/S mints, 1914D, 1922/1922D, 1931S) are VERY expensive in problem free XF-AU, to the point where I'd have to dump several thousand bucks into it just to get 6 or 7 key date holes filled, and I just don't have the money, or the passion, to spend $6k-$8k on a set of Wheat cents. I have 1945-1958 done in AU/BU in an old Raymond board and for LMC's I have 1959-1995 complete in AU/BU, all circulation finds. Ever since I started filling in blue Whitmans with change finds I've been trying to get a Wheat set done with having to purchase as few coins as possible but it's an order of magnitude harder than it was 30/20/10 years ago. I finally broke down and bought a couple of Jeffersons to finish my 1938-2005 (7113) set, but I only had to buy 3 coins to finish that one (48S-50-50D), the rest came out of circulation. I got my first blue Whitmans from my dad at age 6 or 7, I'll be 39 in a month. To me, it's more about the pursuit of something that reminds me of being a kid, than about having some super-fantastic high grade Dansco 100% full of bought coins to which I have no personal connection. I'm of the mind that if I suddenly get the yen to put together nicer sets, I can always upgrade coins. I know not everyone appreciates lower grade circulated coins, but hopefully this at least allows you to understand where I'm coming from here. Excellent explanation .I totally understand that your not into wheat cents the way I or many other guys are . No problem , collect what you like is the name of the game .  |
