Rare Indian Head Cent / IHC Variety Brings Well Over $100k

KurtS Pillar of the Community United States 5318 Posts	Posted 05/06/2008 2:51 pm I'm posting this bit of news because the photo shows very clear markers for this variety. The upper point of the 7 shows up rather well on this coin. This particular coin is the finest graded 1888/7 S1 (MS-64RB), sold recently by Rick Snow for just shy of $125K. There are only 35 known 1888/7 overdates in existence. The other "overdate", the S-7, has since been put into doubt by careful analysis; it may simply be an 1888/888 with an MPD in Liberty's necklace. Despite the extreme rarity of this coin, they are still being found. One was even cherrypicked from a dealer's stock: a VF30 for all of $2. I would not be surprised if that ended up the case. Several years ago I cherried an 1888 Indian cent that looked just like the S-7 overdate, except my coin did not have the 1 in the necklace. I sent it to Billy Crawford (I think it was Billy...) and using overlays he determined it was a repunched date and not an overdate.
