wcg Very beautiful piece!
cableguy815 Not much to say about a coin like this 2 thaler, simply gorgeous!Congrats!

My latest purchase was(suppose) a Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, August the Younger 2 thaler 1655-HS,but when receiving it I was a bit shocked to notice that it's not 58 gr but 41 which makes me think it's closer to a 1-1/2 thaler,63mm.Quite underweight since the standard weight was 43, but I've also found a 42 gr piece.Anyway, the auction house was describing it as a 2 thaler,63mm and when I asked them about the accuracy of their description they sent me an email with a disclaimer that was basically pointing that it's my duty to go and check the item before bidding!Fair enough!I took the chance, bidded and won for 350£ before premium which I don't know if it's good or not considering the grade of the coin!

Thanks everyone. I can't wait to get the pieces. Sadly it might be a while I had to ship the coins to my uncle in Philly or pay 10% more in taxes. As a New Yorker, bidding at Stacks or Heritage is so disadvantageous compared to others... not only do you have to pay 20% on top of hammer but to add insult to injury, you have to pony up another 10% on top of that in taxes. RIDICULOUS! Anyway, back to the coins.

Paul - great piece (and very interesting)! I did some research on comparable sales and I can assure you that 350GBP is a good price for the piece, regardless of it being 1.5 or 2 thalers and the condition. An ugly holed and filled specimen sold for 380GPB in 2015, next lowest was a 2 thaler specimen in an XF details (Graffiti) holder that sold for 650, also in 2015. After that it's 1K and up.

I am quite surprised about this. Who's the auction house? That was a pretty bad mistake to make. Most auction houses have these kinds of provisions but they will do their best to make it right by you. I checked the weight specs of pieces sold and only 1 was 41.88g (the holed and filled piece); the rest run 42g-43g. What is the exact weight of your piece? To my eye it looks genuine; possibly some tooling marks on reverse (date side) but I am uncertain.

One thing I did notice was the "und" in your specimen has a doubling typo. I haven't seen this in any of the other pieces I've managed to find.

Here is another high grade example for reference. I wonder if it is a doubling similar to this specimen or just an engraving error?

cableguy815 I understand your frustration about the extra taxes!Personally I hate the buyers fee,one time having to pay 29%!On top of that you get auction houses that don't do postage and when arranging it yourself you might get to pay 30£ for something that should be paying 10£ max!
It's an uk auction house,Mallams and my email to them requested a confirmation of the 2 thaler coin, knowing that there's a similar 1-1/2 piece minted, weighting less.It was an auction where the majority of items sold were jewelry and only a few coins. From my observation, since I've bought many coins from uk auction houses, they don't reply to emails or give you an evasive reply. On the other hand I have the german auction houses that have always been spot on.Now,i have to say that Mallams where very helpfull, posting the item to me though they normaly don't offer that service.Going back to the coin,it weights 40.8gr and in hand doesn't realy seem to carry any marks of tooling.I vote genuine too,as for the doubling typo I have to say I've missed it.

It's been quiet here. To breathe a bit of life back into this thread let me share with you the ordeal I had to go through these past couple of weeks to finally get those two coins that I've won at the recent Stack's auction.

Things were going as they've always gone, I won a couple of lots, I got the invoice, I arranged for payment and awaited shipment confirmation. If you recall, I mentioned above that I shipped it to Philly to avoid sales tax (I mean why not save $700 bucks right?). The package came but no one was there to pick it up so you'd think it'd be just as easy as going to the post office the next day, right? WRONG! The incompetent hands of the USPS lost the package. After two very stressful weeks of dozens of calls a day (they just don't answer their phones those people) and multiple visits I gave up and threw in the towel. I called Stacks and informed them of what was going on and essentially asked to begin the claim process. They informed me they will have their USPS contacts do some digging and they'll get back to me. In the meantime, while I was waiting on Stack's, I figured I'd continue to harass the post office with my daily barrage of calls. It was nothing short of miraculous that they called me back and informed me that they located the package

I am grateful. The idea of a coin like this being lost in the endless mess that is the USPS was not something I could stomach. Anyway, here it is in hand - I was quite surprised to see how large it was. German double thalers are large coins but this one dwarfs them and then some.

Here it is next to a modern double thaler. The coin's diameter is about as long as the width of a standard PCGS holder

Here are a few other recent pieces from European auctions:

1700 Salzburg Thaler - a common type but looked like a nice high grade specimen

1798 Order of Malta 30 Tari - a rarer type often found with distracting adjustment marks. A nice piece but with unusual toning - still an attractive example

Last year these were minted -- before the French invasion of Malta that year. Nice coin!

cableguy815 I'm glad that you found the coin in the end!It would have been quite a loss considering its beauty and value!Last year in december I had a thaler sent from Frankfurt, with tracking no., through DHL that went missing for more than two weeks so I guess it's inevitable for an unfortunate event like this to happen at a certain point in time!

Here's a Ferdinand II(ND)thaler that I've bought some time ago(from coinworldtv actually!),plenty of damage on it ,but the reverse design makes me think it's a scarce type since I haven't managed to find a similar one yet, though I've checked hundreds of pieces of this very available thaler.

Zohar444 I would very much appreciate if I could get any help with this!I don't expect it to be rare, but I'm still curious.I've been struggling to find articles/books about thalers in general so if you could also recommend me some material to extend my knowledge it would also be great!
