I have a Brazil copper coin that's been counterstamped with 20, but the 20 looks noticeably different from the others of its kind that I've seen. Are there varieties to the counterstamps? Someone I know suggested that the 2 was simply not fully pressed in, but considering the horizontal bars around it I feel like it is.

The top image is the coin I have, the bottom one is the more typical 20.

I´m not an expert on Brazilian coins, but counterstamps were applied in a few mints, the most common was Rio de Janeiro.
There were others like Bahia mint where the punches were made more handmade I think.

Hello. I think I can help. Apparently you have a coin of 1828 of 40 Reis that received a stamp of reduction of face value to 20 Reis (imperial decree of 1835 ~ 38, general stamp) For your photo I can not say which state the coin is, but it works like this_ the letter after the date corresponds to the state of the coin, similar to the American system where S is San Francisco, D Denver, etc. Brazilian colony / kingdom / empire.
Monetary letter
R Rio de Janeiro
B Bahia
M Minas Gerais
G Goiás
SP São Paulo
C Cuiabá
The stamps of this decree can vary esthetically from state to state but, obey photo. There are several other stamps in other times of other decrees, provincial, revolutionaries, etc.
