Hi! I'm very new here and have only been collecting coins for a few months now, but this morning I came across this rusting 5 nickel in my purse.
Since I'm very new to this, I'm not sure whether this coin is a fake, a coin struck on the wrong thing, or something else completely. The only results I get for steel coins have been the wartime pennies, not nickels, so I'm stumped as to what it could be.

It looks like environmental damage to me. It's highly unlikely that it was struck on a steel planchet, as that was two years before cents were struck from the metal. The best way to check is to hold it near a magnet- if there's no noticeable attraction, it's not steel.
Best of luck in your collecting endeavors!
