I've been trying to assemble a type set of 2pence coins from the Uk and territories, and I've yet to find any coins from the falkland islands.

Here is my latest melt tub rescue.. fingers crossed that it's not a fake, but there are no obvious red flags. It's more attractive in hand than in pics, which emphasize the cleaning scratches but do not show the golden toning and partial luster. Yeah, the tub pickin's are pretty thin these days. Usually I don't buy holed coins, but after 180 years I can forgive this one.

This is sort of bittersweet. My mom died in 2008, and my dad is in the process of clearing out the house so he can move. He told me earlier this week, before I came to visit, that he had found a number of coins my mom had put away in various places. I think some are coins that had belonged to her mom.

The coins in the metal box (in the picture below) are mainly from overseas from some visits my parents made to Europe. There are some Russian coins in there, which I think my mom got during a visit to the Baltic states in the 1980s. I think the older American coins belonged to my mom's mom. As you can see, I have quite a lot of sorting to do.

My dad had no idea my mom enjoyed socking away coins that struck her fancy. Neither did I. She never uttered a word about it to either of us.

It's really a fascinating jumble. Among the classic American coins and the European and Canadian coins (some silver), there are quite a few that have no particular value over face: Nickels and dimes from the 70's, run-of-the-mill Lincoln Memorial Cents, that sort of thing.

As you can see, there's some paper currency as well. Most of this is Polish, and I know nothing about it!

Perhaps needless to say, I have no intention of ever selling these. I intend to keep them separate from the rest of my collection and making clear that they're family items.

When I first saw them, I thought of how I might organize them, putting them in 2X2's and so on, but now I'm thinking I might just want to keep them in the box as they are. If I do keep them unsorted, I think I'll catalog them and keep a printout with them so my kids will know what the heck they're looking at.

Just received the 1930-S Mercury dime....now it's only one to go to complete the set!
