I don't see any reason why I would buy this coin. 1840 large cents are plentiful and I would never buy a damaged one when there are so many quality 1840's available.

The 1840 Large Date variety was minted in the millions and thousands survive today. It is not close to being considered rare. In fact the survival rate of the Small Date variety is much lower.
