1774 Halfpenny Machin's Mills - Coin Community Forum

arusak New Member United States 22 Posts	Posted 10/10/2019 08:01 am I have this halfpenny, it was labeled as a Machin's Mills Vlack 3-74A. However, it doesn't match any images of this variety I've seen, and I can't find any match from the plates I've seen online for possible die pairings. Is this just some other non-regal halfpenny? If it is a Machin's Mills, then does anyone know the Vlack # for it? If it makes a difference the coin weighs 7.70 grams. Any help is appreciated. Report this Post to the Staff

It DEFINITELY isn't Vlack 3-74A, neither die matches. I have found the obv paired with a counterfeit Irish 1775 as part of the "long top 7" family of counterfeits. But that family doesn't have the near vertical desenders on the 7 like your coin does. I may put some more effort into it later but I don't have the time right now. Report this Post to the Staff

Probably one of the most misattributed colonial series. Best to do some research on these before buying. Report this Post to the Staff
Conder101 Bedrock of the Community United States 17884 Posts	Posted 10/11/2019 12:43 am Very true, most sellers, if the have a counterfeit half penny, will automatically call it a "Machins Mills" without having any idea wether it is or not. I probably wouldn't accept any Machins Mills piece without a Vlack attribution, and even then, as with your coin, you need to confirm the attribution because they are frequently wrong.
