It could be an area that was blocked from striking fully by something on the die and grease is the most common cause of strike through errors. The amount of the design missing and the condition of the coin determine the value of this kind of error. The letters on your coin are faint, but are still visible, so it's not going to demand a premium over the face value as JimmyD pointed out. It's also possible that the faint letters were caused by damage, but the coins condition makes it hard to determine on way or the other.
