Hoping to pick brains to find out if there is a reason /excuse / unique mint related process that would explain the number engraved on this buffalo cent Anyone have info on what this may be ? Am accepting all scenarios ;)
This would be a Buffalo nickel, not penny. The marks appear to be counter-stamps. These weren't applied during the minting process, but after the coin was in circulation.
As noted above, the 1 is a counter stamp done after the coin left the mint. The F is part of the original coin's design. It stands for the designer's last name of Fraser. You should find this on any Indian Head nickel. James Earle Fraser was the designer.
ANA ID: 3203813 - CONECA ID: N-5637 Clean a coin that may be worth collecting? Please DON'T! When in doubt, leave it dirty!!
