it looks like all the letters are too thick on the back of the coin. or am I seeing things?

Correct the devices are distorted by extreme die wear. Looks like the last polishing before this die is retired. The obverse die looks a bit fresher, with less die wear. So it was probably one to be used for a few more coins.
