My boyfriend found a 1942 Jefferson nickel with no mint mark that only weights 4.78 grams. He wants to know if this is a transitional error.

5 grams is normal +/- .19 grams mint tolerance. Your coin is made of nickel because the 40% silver ones have a mint mark above the dome.

Not an error, just a regular nickel with circulation wear.
The no mint mark simply means it was minted in Philadelphia.
