Came across this one recently. Pretty cool effect. Appears to be a polished die around the obverse device. May have something to do with the finned rim, die attrition error or tilted die. http://goccf.com/t/339818  "We are all flawed, some MD and some PMD." NYI |

 It looks to me that the die was very heavily polished - you can even see this effect through the lapels of the jacket too. Cool find. |

I don't recall seeing such heavy and ubiquitous die polishing lines before. Thx for posting!

#1 No gas bubbles - AMAZING! WOW, that's a really cool find, nice coin! I love the patina and accenting of the polish lines - no major hits or distractions either, smooth brown patina. That's VERY unusual for any 80'S coin that has worn to an ~EF-40/45 level. KEEPER! I have all kinds of cool looking memorial cents. Us memorial collectors are in a weird situation - sadly. Coins like this are seen as essentially "valueless" in present times. We have to simply collect purely for the love of the series. I have some stunning circulated memorials whose highest possible value would be in the RedBook at probably 5 cents in 65 RD - so my coins are worth 1 cent "by the book". LOL I don't care, if it looks cool, interesting and nice, I add it. My hope is attrition and lack of collecting interest will eventually make the series a "sleeper" - the all the nice ones already pulled from OBW, mint sets and circulation. The numbers are already reducing in circulation - the Shield ratio keeps going up every year. GO ATTRITION GO! |

Just very heavy die polishing. (Common on the 1983 and 84 cents) A lot of clashing events on those two years.

Very cool !
Looks like a flexible abrasive was used first which would slightly dip into the recesses of the die and follow and abrade the edge of the recess more ( think whole coin Trail ). The halo began with this and was finished when a less flexible and finer abrasive/polish finished the high points of the die.
Again, very cool !
