Hello, I don't come across many Mercury dimes in Rome. Most are priced at high numismatic prices (ie €5 + for a cull) when I find them below €3 I buy them. I only have a few but I'd like to use the 1916 and 1936 to learn more about how these grades... Any thoughts would be appreciated!     These are what I usually find...   |

The 1916 I'll say VF-25 with obverse staining . The 1936 is almost the same VF-30 .

I'll say VF-35, perhaps EF-40, sharpness on the l916, and VF-25+ sharpness on the 1936.

 Either my eyes or your photos are a little blurry. The 1916 looks VF35 and the 1936 VF25. |

@Hondo, it's strange and I've posted about it before on a few threads; Rome does not have a decent, conventional coin shop for all-grade-coins; Turin and Genova do, but Rome does not. I visit two regularly; one has polished common date Morgans for 60 euro; another focues on ancients and occassionally has something decent from the U.S.
I find A LOT of 19th century European crown coins and I collect these at metal weight and a few at numismatic grade.
However, Rome has a massive consignment shop culture. Basically, people leave their stuff and it sells 50/50 is split between the shop and the consignor. I find most of my coins at these shops. After 60 days, if an item hasn't sold, it is discounted 20-50%. (the 1916 Merc was 2.45 discounted from 4.95 for instance) I have had some great finds at these shops; ancients, Medieval hammered coins, and lots of random American stuff.
There is also a large outdoor market culture here; most notably Porta Portese. It's FULL of fakes, but there are a few reputable dealers; I posted pics on another thread of 34 half dollars I bought last week at 8 euro each. All polished - which is done by nearly EVERY Italian collector.

T-BOP- I gotta call you out on this one... You graded that 36 better than the 16? Now I know for a fact your eyes need to be checked  Maybe you're "net" grading... Anywho, sharpness my guess is XF40 - 1916 VF-25-30 for the 1936 You realize when you know how to think, it empowers you far beyond those who know only what to think.

So from my collecting point of view, I think I'll capsule the 1916 and put the 1936 in the roll with its culled cousins....

I wouldn't mind being in Rome as a collector since there are quite a few absolutely beautiful Italian coins that might be available there but that are nearly impossible to find here in the US; the 1925-R gold 100 lire comes to mind, as does the 1928 20 lire, just to think of two for now.
Your 1916 has a reverse misaligned die strike that is fairly prominent; I would grade it EF45
The 1936 VF30.
