Just got done and am officially at 100,000 nickels searched. I will be posting my data later this evening. However, I couldn't wait to share, found ANOTHER key date! A 1944-S nickel at 99,782 nickels searched.
I am officially at 100,000 nickels searched and well on my way to completing the 1938-1961 Jefferson set! I found not one, but two key date nickels in this hunt, a 1938-D (needed for second book) and a 1944-S (needed for first book). Heading into this I was beginning to have my doubts as if I should even keep going and finding that 1944-S has really put the wind back into my sails!
For my first book I still need the following: 1938-S, 1942-S, and a 1943-D
As mentioned before I have started a second book since I found a 1950-D in my very first box when I began this back in June 2015 (confirmed via Amazon order history of the book). For the second book I need the following: 1938-S, 1939-D, 1942-D, 1942-P, 1942-S, 1943-D, 1944-S, 1948-S, 1950-D
Definitely an anomaly to have not found a 1948-S in 100K coins, even in your part of the country... while difficult to find, they're certainly out there. I've found 70 of them over the course of the past 7 1/2 years or so... Only the 1938-S (15), 1939-S (18), 1944-S (35), 1942-S (37), and 1951-S (67) have been harder pulls for me amongst S-mint Jeffersons...
I believe the three toughest coins for you to find will be the 1939-D (3), 1950-D (5), and 1943-D (11)... BTW, I've found 10 1938-Ds. This is in about 1.64 million coins searched.
For the P-mints, your two toughest pulls are also mine: 1942-P (23) and 1955 (23) are in a flat-footed tie for me after I found two of the '42-Ps last month.

Thank you for the numbers John77! I live in Toledo, Oh (NW Ohio) so my region may be different than yours. Toledo has a lot of silver hunters, not so much general coin roll hunting so I know the silver dates will be very tough. The only 1948-S that I have came in that first batch of 8,000 nickels back in 2015. I really, really wish that I would have kept the data on those boxes, but I was still very much in a learning phase and not taking it as seriously as I am now.
I really enjoy theses posts. It is amazing to me that a set can still be found in circulation. I tmakes for a good way to intro newbies to the hobby as well.
BTW...have either of you looked to see if your 38s-40s are Type I or Type II REV? It would be interesting to know!
The following shows info on identifying them outside of the info PCGS seems to be aware of. They only tell how to do it by the steps. It was a CCF member who posted the original info but I do not know who it was.

Yes, I'm in Southern California near L.A... I do a lot of searching around my area and up to about 30 miles north and 30 miles south or so from where I live... though I'm probably going to branch out and do some Saturday San Diego excursions in the near future in hopes of finding a 2020 W "bat quarter"...

Earl42 I am glad that you are enjoying the posts! I am hoping that I can continue to go through 10,000 each week until these two works are completed. I will have to look into that with my 1938-1940 coins. I have never heard of the different reverse so thank you for sharing.
John77 your location explains you S mint mark finds haha! I spent a week out in San Diego back in 2016 and absolutely loved it. If you're into sushi be sure to check out Sushi Ota over by Pacific Beach. Hands down the best sea urchin that I have ever experienced.
According to PCGS, a 1939-rev-38 Philly is worth basically nothing circulated, but a 1939-rev-40 is worth a few bucks. That seems unusual if the former is far more scare than the latter.
I didn't know the trick about the S-serif to identify the reverse of 1940. That will definitely come in handy, as steps on circulated nickels tend to be very worn (or possibly not well struck in the first place).

Yes, I am very lucky to be out here from a CRH perspective... I've always loved San Diego, but I kind of stopped traveling long distances while C0VID ran its course from 2020-22... As for food, well, the more cooked, the better with me lol... one of my best friends recommended a Mexican restaurant called "Sayulitas" - I'm half Hispanic, so this is much more up my alley.

John77 that's too funny. We just got back from Lucha Libre which is our regular spot. The owner jokes that we are a line item on his income statement, but I think he's serious.

That's funny. That owner could indeed be serious lol.
And, personally, I don't even need to go out to get authentic hispanic food... my best friend at work is full-blooded hispanic, and I quite often end up with her home-cooked meals from the night before as some of her co-workers often convince her to go out to lunch to try out new places rather than eat what she brought from home - she has three kids and a husband and always makes more than they need. She knows I love her cooking, so when she doesn't have it for her lunch, she offers it to me and I end up with a couple of nice meals out of it. And, she's also very interested in my coin stuff - my CRH finds and my little ebay business that goes with it.
BTW, just started a new group of nickels I bought during my excursions up north (Ventura/Oxnard CA area) yesterday...the second pre-60 I found in some CWRs? Yes, a 1948-S in XF./AU!

I checked a trio of 1939 nickels that I had set aside. Two have Reverse of 1940, one has Reverse of 1938. All of them have completely worn off steps. That's a great trick, Earle! Thanks for rescuing that little guide. The serif on the S of Pluribus is plain as day.
The home cooked meals are the best! We've been fortunate enough to be invited to a few family gatherings that they have had and got to experience their home meals. And of course you would find a 1948-S that's fantastic!
Nice finds as well Brandmeister! I'll have to check my nickels at some point. I would like to find a Henning nickel for my collection, but I know that the odds are stacked against me.
