Quote:While I was visiting my parents today my mom gave me a 1919 Buffalo nickel that she found in change when she was a little girl. She has kept it her entire life and passed it on to me. Outstanding! The sentimental value is priceless.

Regarding your question about Canadian nickels, since 1982 the Royal Canadian Mint has been incrementally removing from circulation the 99.9% nickel coins and melting them, leaving few in circulation from the 1970s and earlier.

I found my second 1939-S tonight. Currently have another 4,000 nickels to search through tomorrow to bring the total tally to 90,000. I didn't get to begin searching until tonight, got busy with work this week and I need sleep in order to continue making gains in the gym.

Here are the totals after this hunt. So the 1939-S is actually the third one that I have ever found. I must have found one in those first 8,000 nickels that I searched back in 2015. So I now have 3. Zero buffalos this batch of 10,000, and I did have a pair of upgrades for the 1946-S and 1947. I have another order for 10,000 for next week which will bring me to 100,000. I did also find a pair of impaired proofs, a 1988-S and a 2004-S For my first book I still need the following: 1938-S, 1939-D, 1942-S, 1943-D, and a 1944-S As mentioned before I have started a second book since I found a 1950-D in my very first box when I began this back in June 2015 (confirmed via Amazon order history of the book). For the second book I need the following: 1938-D, 1938-S, 1939-D, 1942-D, 1942-P, 1942-S, 1943-D, 1944-S, 1948-S, 1950-D The 1938-D that I have in my first book I found in change while I was on a date with my now wife at an arcade place called Nickel World. By chance I looked at the nickel that I was about to put into the machine and saw 1938. When I flipped it over I saw the D mint mark and immediately placed it in my wallet knowing that I probably needed it for the book that I had started. Anyway, below are the totals. I will post the video later on once it's uploaded for anyone that is interested.

At 94,578 nickels tonight I found a 1938-D. It's somewhat ironic that I was just telling the story of how I found my first one back in 2015, but I do need this one for my second book. I still have another 4,000 nickels to search out of this batch of 10,000. No buffalos and no silver War Nickels yet. At this point in this hunt I am finding more from the 1940's than the 1950's which is off from the average. On another note, I was cut off today from using the coin counter at the bank that I work for. The last batch of 10,000 "broke" the machine last Saturday morning so it is out of service until a part comes in next week. They do use the machine quite a bit for other customers so having it out of order is an inconvenience. However, I purchased a coin sorter this afternoon and will be receiving it tomorrow. I will then be filling Brink's bags in $200 increments as I am hunting. Honestly this is a better arrangement for all of us. My nickels will be counted as I am hunting and I can still simply drop them off to be deposited when I am finished so the tellers don't spend an hour or two sorting them on busy Saturdays.

This, from what I understand, is the main reason the big banks got rid of them all of those years ago - too much money spent repairing them to make it worth the effort. Great find on the '38-D, btw... always love seeing those key date Jeffersons pulled from the wild!
