Back in the late 50s up through the 80s my grandfather (still moving around washers and dryers at 75!) had laundromats and so had a lot of coins to go through weekly. He got a complete set of Jeffersons a couple times over except for finding a 1950-D. Back then I know there had to be more of everything old circulating, but he obviously was not going through 10K nickels at a time like you are. However, over the years I have to wonder how many he did go through. BTW, I also got an almost complete collection from circulation when I started to look back then. I was lacking a 1938-S, 39-D and 50-D. Quote: ...Ohio... Yup...now I am. Was always in PA until a few years ago. When in High School I was in the upper right corner of PA so the New York and Ohio borders were always nearby...thus Cedar Point or Niagara Falls field trips back then.

Quote: First box was absolutely fantastic! 35 Jeffersons from 1938-1959 in that box, including the 1945-P, a pair of impaired proofs, a 2009-D, and 5 Canadians and I found a 1938-S which is a key date. Excellent! Quote: I still need a 1939-D and a 1943-D where in the heck are they!?!?! Quote: Currently at 192,000 nickels searched with 8,000 left in this batch. Hopefully these remaining boxes are even better! Quote: Below are pics of the 1938-S and the pair of impaired proofs that I found. This is now the third 1938-S that I have come across in 192,000 nickels. Looking good!

Went through another 3,000 last night and found a 1956 Canadian nickel in really nice shape. Also a 1942-S, a 1950-P, a 1954-P black beauty, and a 1943-S

Here's the latest one I have only found a handful that look like these with the toning. All from the 1950s. It's a deep, dark color, still has some luster. It's almost like it's made from a different metal all together.

I have now found over 100 of the 1939-P which means more than 100 times I have flipped that coin over to see no mint mark. This has become slightly aggravating, in a comical way, because I want to see the D mint mark! The mintage of the 1938-S, which I have now found 3 of, was 4,105,000 while the 1939-D was 3,514,000. The S coins are more rare here in general it seems since I am in Ohio, but why Why oh Why is this 1939-D so incredibly difficult? The 1943-D gets a pass for it's difficulty with it's low mintage of 15,294,000 and being 35% silver we all know the silver War Nickels were collected, hoarded, and eventually sold to coin dealers. But this 1939-D makes zero sense to me as to why I have not found one yet! Aaaaarrrggghhh! I have 5,000 left of this batch and will be going through them all tonight.

Well, as far as the '39 D goes, I've been sitting on several dozen of them. Maybe I should release them into the wild--might make someone's day.

Just my opinion, but the 1939-D is more "famous." At least in my experience people talking over Jeffersons mention it wi the 50-D and 43-D, but you rarely hear them talking of the other ones which are just semi-keys. Maybe that is why the numbers don't seem to go well?
Hmmm...6.8 cubic yards more 1938-S nickels made than 1939-D!
I take it for granted you are checking the 39s for DDRs?

Excellent point on the additional cubic yards of nickels. I have not been checking any of the 1939-P for the DDR. However, I have been saving all of my finds. Checking for varieties and errors will be something to do once I have completed the set. I'm hoping to find a Henning nickel for historical purposes, but I'm not holding my breath on that. About to finish going through the remaining 1,040 nickels. I'll have the updated chart up tonight.

Below are the totals at 200,000. I am impressed that I made it this far this quickly. I am prepared to make it to the next milestone of 250,000, which is only 5 weeks away. The 300,000 milestone is around the end of January and 350,000 will be around the beginning of March 2024. The 500,000 mark at the current pace is sometime in the middle of June 2024. Fishing will begin to take priority sometime in April and most certainly will take priority in May and June. After the 350,000 mark this project will be determined on a weekly basis and will literally be weather dependent. I am really, really hoping to have this compete by then.
