Anyone new to the hobby is by definition inexperienced. Don't let this one purchase discourage you.
Morgans are a good place to start. For less than $40 you can get a very nice coin that holds its value.
The most important thing to look for are original surfaces. That does NOT mean uncirculated, pristine, lustrous examples. AVOID those until you gain more experience assessing coins. Instead, look for damage-free coins with honest, even wear patterns and colors.
