Recently I posted about cleaning an indian head covered with dark gunk. It was suggested to treat with acetone then Verdi-Care. As it turned out, it was a great process to recover the natural appearance of the coin and reveal an S on a 1909 Indian head. I recently purchased a nice 1857 Flying Eagle coated with a dark substance. I did the acetone soak then Verdi-Care and I think the coin looks much better and is conserved.

Needs more attention .
Still lots of green apparent on the reverse.
Fairly nice example!

It looks original, I would not process any further. Nicely done restoration.
I swing a metal detector and have a knack for finding dirty old coins.

Thanks for the feedback. I have always been afraid to clean my coins. I think conserving coins is a positive thing. It seems the purist of the coin community say to never do anything to coins because it will reduce the value of the coin. To me, I think the acetone/Verdi-Care treatment make the coin more appealing to me.

Other than ancients, never clean coins. Conserving is ok, but conserving is not cleaning.
Your photos are a bit dark. Also, try using a gray background,14 or 18% gray scale.

That is a great toolset and likely all you would ever need for general circulation coins.

The flying eagle looks good. There is a little bit of green on the coin so I would keep it in Verdi care for 24 hours which should neutralize anything on the coin. My dealer also recommends coin care but you have to be careful with it.

Overall good job on the coin.

Excellent result there. There are so few cases when cleaning/conserving coins is actually good, and this and your last one are two good examples.
