Opinion needed on this 1955-D Wheat penny with what looks like a wide L on Liberty. Not sure if this was caused by a deteriorated die or if it's just too close to the rim that caused this.

It's a mix of minor issues. The design placed the L near(er) the edge, some circulation wear, and a bit of post-strike damage. Nothing significant, I'm afraid.

Oh I see now. Something must have struck the L and made it appear wider. Here is another Wheat penny for comparison.

to the CCF "wide L" that's a new one on me. Kinda like L on the rim.

Could be the die was just showing some wear from over use.
