1886 V Nickel "good Details" But Scratched

Humanist1287 Pillar of the Community United States 1118 Posts	Posted 03/17/2026 1:21 pm I found this slabbed 1886 V nickel recently on ebay. It's rated as "good details" but has some scratches. The scratches are on the reverse, and to me look pretty minor. I think it's a pretty nice looking coin though IMO. Any thoughts? Would this be a worthwhile purchase? Not too bad if you ask me for around 100 dollars for graded/slabbed. I don't know, perhaps it might have been cleaned at some point. I just like to get others perspectives sometimes. I know ultimately it's up to me. I have been working on trying the best coins I can find to work with within my budget. I like the obverse and the scratches on the reverse appear to be old and toned over, so not too distracting. For a hole filler in a set, seems like a decent choice. Report this Post to the Staff

Please be mindful to include the denomination in your thread titles. There were a lot of denominations minted in 1886. I'm going to ask a moderator to do so. Humanist1287 Pillar of the Community United States 1118 Posts	Posted 03/19/2026 07:54 am I mean, yeah, it's technically "damaged" but with some minor scratches, especially on the reverse that aren't very prominent, I think it's a very nice coin for the money. 60-70 dollars is a lot when you are on a budget somewhat. For the price and overall quality of the coin, I, myself, can personally let that kinda thing slide. I personally would have considered it... but yeah.. Somebody else snatched it up quickly. My goal is to own an 1886 eventually, but I'd like to get the nicest one I can for the best deal. I'm personally willing to overlook certain things. As I've noted in another of your threads, it's best to save up for a problem-free example that you'll be happy with forever, rather than settle for a coin with issues.
