Poll Question
A post on Shield nickels the other day had me thinking about nickels. I have all of them in my type set, but aside from starting, and then abandoning toned Buffs, have not concentrated on collecting additional nickels, although I have considered both Liberties and Shields. The lack of many difficult branch mint issues makes sets of both types look doable except for the 1879 and 1880 Shield issues, if varieties are omitted. My favorite design is the Buffalo nickel. The Indian portrait on the obverse is very human and emotionally evocative, more so to me than any of the dead heads gracing current and former coins. The buffalo on the reverse is both realistically portrayed and really cool with its nose to tail rim to rim design. The design devices take up almost the entirety of both sides, and what fields exist are textured. I think Fraser's design stands well against any other American coin that has been issued. So, do you have a favorite, and which is it? I have included the Three Cent Nickel, and listed only one type of Buffalo nickel, because I find the differences between types one and two inconsequential. Who would pick anything besides the most beautiful 5-cent piece, the Buffalo nickel, is beyond me...  |

I'm the guy that picked Jefferson. I agree the buffalo obverse and reverse is nicer but buffalo loses out because the dates rub off so easy. That really stinks from a collecting standpoint. Plus you can pull silver from Jefferson's...

LibertyEagle20, you have a point, but a Buffalo nickel in an MS condition is an amazing design to look at.

Jefferson has the slimmest edge over Buffalo for me. Jefferson was the first nickel folder I got and it was filled before I moved them to a Dansco album. The Buffalo folder only had a few at that time I moved it, but I eventually finished that set as well.

Yes my favorite is the Buffalo, evidently like the majority of us. I will add I love the look of mint state Jefferson War Nickels as well; the addition of some silver gives them a special gleam. I believe we get interest in coins as kids and what little boy doesn't love Buffalo nickels |

Although I have collected quite a few valuable Jefferson nickels, the design aesthetic simply cannot compete with the Buffalo nickel. Both the Indian and the Buffalo are a beautiful representation of America's early 20th century obsession with settling the West. |
