snagar New Member United States 4 Posts	Posted 10/18/2009 05:42 am recently came across 2 1853o Seated Liberty halves one ungraded the other is graded anacs vf35 with cert. number.....now question is in the 2010 Red Book it says 3 are known in any condition and stacks auction company sold 1 for $368,000 in a vf35 now if this coin is anacs certified in the same grade should that raise any red flags reason being the price for the coin is under $200.00 any help would be appreciated!! SsuperDdave Moderator United States 23522 Posts	Posted 10/18/2009 10:44 am The overwhelming majority of Seated halves minted by New Orleans in 1853 were of the "Arrows and Rays" type. These are pretty common - over a million were minted, and $200 for two of them in VF condition would be overpriced. 5 or so were minted with the old dies, lacking the arrows and rays. ANACS has graded no 1853-O Seated halves lacking arrows and rays, and approximately 500 examples with arrows and rays. Report this Post to the Staff
cownas22 Pillar of the Community United States 1055 Posts	Posted 10/18/2009 10:51 am There are two major varieties for 1853-O Seated halves. The Variety 1 has Large Letters in Legend (This is the one with 3 known for this year). The other is Variety 2 (w/ Arrows and Rays) The 1853-O Arrows and Rays saw a mintage of 1,328,000. This is still a desirable variety for type collectors and is just a plain beautiful reverse design. I suspect this is the coin you are referring to. A 1853-O Arrows & Rays in VF-35 Would be worth $180 in VF-20 and $360 in XF-40 according to Numismedia. Report this Post to the Staff
