1977D Ike A Peg Leg and Clipped E? Posted over at the Ike Group also for input, but I feel pretty good that this is a 1977 d Peg Leg and Clipped E. Unfortunately, its in rough circ condition. :(

Chuck, Nice I personally would call it a peg leg with what has been come to be called a Redwood Trunk flair at the base of the "R". Compared to the normal base of the "R" for the 1978 Ike That one has definitely had some die grinding done to it. Especially that "E" in WE There can be no argument that it is definitely a Clipped "E" Ike. On the reverse shot you have I "Think" I can see some bends in the field next to the earth at 3:00 and roughly 6:00. A bit of a Jaw Line clash left that did not get polished out? Man these Ike varieties sure are a blast something new and interesting all the time Terry

Hello All, 1st post here. I'm a newbie to collecting, and I've been lurking here and on a few other forums. We aquired a nice collection when the my wife's mom passed away. I've gotten more interested in collecting since we aquired the family collection. I decided that collecting Ike dollars would be a good place to start for a newbie, because I have always liked the coins, and they aren't super expensive. The family collection came with about 25 various ikes, but I decided to ignore those and collect a new set. So far, I have the 73-78 uncirculated mint sets, the '71S - 74S uncirculated silvers, and a 71S proof. Sorry for the bad pic, my camera is acting up. One of the '78 Ikes in the family collection is super shiny. I can't decide if it's a circulated proof, or a business strike on a proof planchet. Any ideas?

Terry:
I tried to blow up the sellers photo and concentrate on the Islands and the lava flow lines.
I can't make out a Island chain, it looks like 2 separate islands and I can't make out any extra flow lines by the LL or 2 lines between the N & E.
That's not to say it's not there- the picture is hard to get a precise angle on it.
I hope your right and you got yourself another nice FEV, but I don't see it,but also, I'm no expert!
How's that for hedging my bet (LOL!)
Good luck with this one!
Chuck.

I know what you mean chuck, about hedging the bet I went back and forth on it for about an hour playing around with the photo editing software. And in the end I just ended up looking at the condition asking myself if I would be happy with it if the coin is not an FEV. And I just kept having that nagging feeling in my gut that I had better pull the trigger. Mostly based on the shape of the Gulf of Mexico and the top Tail Divider. Just all part of the game of hunting for Ike Varieties Most fun coin series I have ever collected. Thanks for the extra set of eyes. Jayman, Nice batch of Ike's Terry

Quote: Sorry for the bad pic, my camera is acting up. An A for effort! You appear to be off to a good start. Quote: One of the '78 Ikes in the family collection is super shiny. If it is a 1978 or 1978-D, then it may have been harshly cleaned at one point or it could be a very nice MS strike.

Thanks for the welcome everyone. Here's a pic of the ikes that were in the family collection. The shiny 78 is a Denver, so I guess it might have been whizzed. I'm really enjoying this thread and the fourm. So much to learn!

Mach1 Looks like a very good start to a collection. Some nice looking Ike's there. The Eisenhower dollar Series has been one of the most fun and challenging coins I have ever collected. I can't wait for the new Eisenhower book to come out from the guys at the Ike Group. I have had the good fortune to preview a couple of chapters of the book. All I can say is I am on the edge of my seat waiting for it Hopefully going to be available May 1st Ike Variety Heaven
