I want to get a USB microscope before I go selling off my penny hoard. Anyone have a recommendation for a good mid-range one?  |

I have a celestron 10-150x. Works well. I paid $45 for it. I've never seen or used any other brands. It is hard to take a pic of an entire coin, but if you want amazing detail, then it works well for that. There may be many better ones, put I have been happy with this one so far. Had it for about 2 weeks.

I would recommend against all of them because I have yet to see one that works well at all for lighting a coin. Decent stereomicroscopes can be had for under $100 and they work FAR better with inexpensive (and adjustable) lighting solutions.

I would recommend the Model MP-613 by Applied Corp. I sold off all of my Confederate Money that was in a Display Frame. I bought this unit from a ANA Money Show in Charlotte,N.C. I was looking for quality and a Metal Frame and Base, do you really want plastic equipment. This unit also has a 10 X and 30 X Power. adjustable light- low to dim and swivel base. I disagree with the above statement that says to avoid them because lighting is hard. I agree that the built in lighting on the USB microscopes suck big time. And in general, lighting is hard with photography, but I just put a 12-inch long full-spectrum fluorescent bulb next to the USB camera and I get good lighting with accurate depictions of color, even on my copper coins.

That's what I do now robudo. Its okay and a bit frustrating at times. But I can't get that close up thigh shot of oddities and whatnot. I guess a better camera would help that, but if I am going to spend money on that wouldn't it be better to just by some sort of USB microscope?

I would like to see such a set-up, because from what I had heard, the lighting was built-in and wasn't controllable. I would really like to see a USB scope that doesn't come with its own lighting. That would be nice.

I covered all but one with rubber caps and then covered the one with a white filter that I made, works o.k. There are USB scopes where you can turn off the on board LED's.
