Lately, I've been looking for volume two of the Littleton Jefferson nickel coin folders as I wanted to replace my 25-year-old Whitman coin folder. When I finally found it and began to take out the Jefferson's from the old Whitman folder, I noticed hard green stuff on the edge of the coins. Of course, the "ancient" cardboard from the Whitman folder had shed particles and created that green stuff (right?) There was really nothing I could do, so I just placed them one-by-one into the new archival safe Littleton folder.

Was this the right move, or should I purchase more 2x2s and a 3-ring binder (and pages) and put them in that?

Just a note: I'm on a very, very tight budget. If you think the 3-ring binder idea is the way to go, I hope it's inexpensive.

From what I have seen, the 3-ring binders are actually the cheapest way to go.
Thanks for posting this...have to think about how I am storing mine.

I purchased the Cowen 2x2s and archival pages from wizardcoinsupply, and used a couple of 3-ring binders that I had purchased from Walmart earlier. Was the cheapest way to go.

So what your saying is, I shouldn't have placed those nickels in the archival safe Littleton folder?

Folders offer the least amount of protection for coins. Although they may be described as archival safe, it is only relative to other folders. 2x2s and albums are better for you in the long run.

Let's do some math...

The three Littleton folders, which hold 198 coins, would cost $7.80

(200) 2x2 flips would be $3.90

http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/pro...el-size.html

(10) 20 pocket pages to hole those 200 2x2s would be $9.40

An inexpensive 3-ring binder can be found at OfficeDepot, Staples, Target, Walmart, etc. My searches show them for less than $2.

The Jefferson nickel Danco album is $17.89

So you can pay...

$7.80 for folders
$15.30 for a three-ring binder and 2x2 setup
$17.80 for a Dansco Album

None of these prices include shipping and you can probably save a lot more if you buy this stuff at a coin show or local coin shop.

I'd love to upgrade everything to 3-ring binders and 2x2 setups, but I have two problems: (1) I've already invested $3.49 in each folder and (2) I'd have no place to store them...
I guess if I want my coins to last long and (hopefully) make a return investment in 60 years, it'd be best to upgrade. Slowly but surely, I guess.

My coins spent five years in folders before being moved to albums. They survived. Just keep them in a stable environment (low humidity and stable temperature). You might even want to put your folders into large Ziploc type bags for added protection.

Ziploc bags, absolutely. Put your folders in there, press out the air & seal and store in a cool, dry place not affected by heat or humidity.

Alright then, I'll use Ziploc bags. BTW, you can get 20 pocket pages for $0.19 a piece at the Coin World Marketplace here: http://www.coinworld.com/dealers/am...n-page-1-ea/
