Hi,
I am having a problem with a simple copy command. I use excel to catalog my coins. I've I have a column in which I list the ASW and another which lists the value of the coin for it's bullion value. I have no problem with either using copy and paste or auto fill to put the ASW value into it's column. My problem is that when I copy and paste or auto fill the column with the formula, it always changes the cell number which in which I have the current silver spot.
An example of a cell I copy is; =SUM(J100*K1) when I paste it I get; =SUM(J101*K2). No matter what I do I cannot get the formula to maintain a constant of K1.

Can anyone help with this? It sure would make things easier then going into each cell and changing to the constant of K1!

use $K$1, that will always refer to k1, whenever you don't use the dollar sign it is a relative location. you can also do stuff like $K1, or K$1 to make the row or column constant and the other relative

Glen,
no problem, glad I could help
Excel is extremely useful and powerful, there are so many things you can do with it.
but sometimes getting it to do the simplest can be frustrating.
I also use excel to catalog my collection, as do many others.
my spreadsheet is in a perpetual state of evolution.
I have 40+ tabs, one each for my albums and assorted other stuff.
and I'm in the process now of importing all of numismedia's coin values so that I
have a dynamic valuation of my collection based on type, year, and grade.
If you need any help with anything else let me know.

I just made up some penny roll listings with Excel. It's nice to have a protective feature on it, and the use of formulas make computations easy.

Why do you use the formula:

=sum(j100*k1)

Would you get the same answer if you used:

=j100*k1

Yep, using SUM for just one value is not only pointless but increases the size of the spreadsheet on disk and if done enough times will also slow the s/s down. Just j100*$k$1 would be fine.
