Sooo ... I am slowly and quietly putting together a Peace dollar date/mm set ... all 24 coins.

11 down so far ... and just acquired this lovely 1934-D.

Coin is in a PCGS holder. Poor photos do not in any way capture the brillance of the luster.

Grade opinions?

MS-64 for sure, picture of reverse doesn't seem quite as clear as obverse - a beautiful example!

I would say by knowing your standards it must be at least MS65. Congratulations on your acquisition.

Thanks for the replies ... this sub-forum is quite busy ... great for us.

Any other opinions?

I will post the actual PCGS grade with photo of coin in holder after work tomorrow.

Mr searcher, question, if I may; I don't have any PCGS coins myself, couple old ANACS from the 90's is the extent - what does MS64+ mean? Did they send you an explanation saying it was really better that their usual MS64's, but not quite up to MS65 criteria? I'm guessing would mean a better price if you ever decided to sell it?

Good question and basically correct ... I'll offer what I know with some personal opinions thrown in for flavor.

Within the past few years (not sure of the exact timing) both PGCS and NGC (the top 2 TPG) decided to deploy the marketing tool of 'grades within grades'. Their stated intent ... in my words ... was to differentiate coins that are better than average but not deserving of the higher grade. Just as you stated in you question.

NGC uses a star * .... PCGS uses a plus +.

Personally I think the entire concept is silly ... grading is so subjective that 10 experts will have 8 different opinions on the same coin ... so any attempt to resolve this to a 1/2 grade point is purely a marketing idea and not based on reality IMHO.

This concept of + grading appeals mainly to the registry set enthusiast who is chasing numbers instead of coins.

I purchased this 1934-D because I liked the coin in hand ... not because of the + grade.

That said ... we need to recognize as serious collectors the reality of the marketplace as it is ... and alas this + grading has gained an acceptance and does indeed price a coin higher in most cases than a coin graded at just the technical grade.

PCGS Price Guide for this 1934-D Peace dollar:

MS64 ...... $650
MS64+ ..... $800
MS65 ...... $1700

Hope that explanation helps.

Yup, that explanation makes perfect sense to me, and I agree it's another marketing thing around all the premiums associated with 'high-end' coins, collected by only the most discriminating, I guess. What will they come up with next?

That's fair. I was wavering between 64 & 65 depending on luster and based on your comment that the luster was not adequatley represented in the images, I would have leaned towards 65.
