It was nice to finally see these Laura Gardin Fraser designs used on a US coin. She developed them for use on the Washington quarter in 1932, but they were bypassed at the time in favor of John Flanagan's designs. I picked up the UNC version back when they were first released. With a weight of 8.359 grams of 0.900 fine gold, it contains 7.523 grams of pure gold. As a troy ounce weighs 31.1 grams, the US $5.00 gold coin contains (7.523 g / 31.1 g) or 0.2419 troy ounces of gold - just under a quarter ounce. Collecting history one coin or medal at a time!
