Not sure if this qualifies for this forum section, but I was wondering what type of obscure overseas coins you've found in circulation within Australia. I mean, I'm sure we've all encountered our fair share of kiwi 10/20 cent pieces etc, but what other world coins have shown up in your change that have come as a surprise? I've picked up a few in the last few months, namely philipino and fijian coins but nothing too far-a-field. Interested to hear of your finds...

This years total so far for New Zealand coins is 22 x 20c, 9 x 10c, 17 x 5c and a 1965 6d. For Fiji I have only found 1 x 20c and 2 x 5c. A few weeks ago I found a 1969 Netherlands 25c in a bag of 5c pieces from the bank.

I've found quite a few foreign coins here over the years, and been given quite a bit more by friends and relatives that have found "weird coins" in change. NZ of course, but also our other Pacific neighbours. In order of common-ness, I'd rate them: Fiji, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea (which would probably be more common if they had the Queen's portrait on them like everyone else has) and the Cook Islands (of which I have encountered a grand total of 1 coin in my 20-plus years of change-searching). French territories such as New Caledonia, French Polynesia and the now-obsolete New Hebrides are also occasionally spotted, though their more obvious foreign-ness makes their circulating lifespan here brief.

British coins, of course, still put in a strong appearance, especially the older ones which were the same size as ours and which have been demonetised back in the Old Dart. Other coins spotted: Sri Lanka 5 rupees for a $2 coin; US and Canadian dimes for 5¢ coins; Singapore $1 for Aussie $1; Philippine and older Thai and Indonesian coins also sometimes sneak into change, even though they aren't really a close match for anything local.

The "oddest" coin I've recorded as being spotted from local circulation is a South Korean 500 won (KM# 27), which my mum was given in change a few years ago. It looks nothing at all like any Australian coin, and I assume it was mistaken for a 20¢, since that's the nearest size-equivalent.

It sure is nice. It is what makes collecting so much fun. Where has yhis coin been for 80 years to:
  • remain UNC
  • turn up in a bag of Oz 1 cent pieces?

Got a friend who's new job sometimes sees him at the register of his shop. He said they had some odd finds that had ended up in a special compartment of the till and passed 'em on to me. Some usual suspects, some not;
1972 US Liberty Quarter
1984 Philipino 25 Sentimo
1992 Malaysian 20 Sen
2006 New Zealand 20 cents (new design)
1977 Fijian 5 cents
2546 Thai 1 Baht (thai date),(2003)
1995 Polish 50 Groszy
2001 Polish 10 Groszy
1989 Korean 100 Won

I often get foreign coins in the till at my Son's shop, most common are NZ 20¢ & Fiji 50¢. There were a few other countries, a couple US nickels, and I think 1 x Samoa 20¢.

NZ 20¢ - 1986
5¢ - 1967

Fiji:50¢ - 1975, 86, 87, 2 x 95, 3 x 96, 99, 00
20¢ - 1987, 96
10¢ - 1992
5¢ - 1982, 97

life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved
