With help from Nancyc I've been putting together a set of circulation Aussie dollars. Picked up a Australian dollar Dansco album at a good price ($15 U. S. w/ shipping) so it looks like I'm going to try for the NIFC dollars too. So now for my question, this album is only labeled up to the 2003 Volunteers, Vietnam Vets and Korea dollars. I need a listing of the 2004 to 2010 holes. Krause is only moderately helpful here. Also, when there are coins with multiple mints, where do you guys hide the mint marks?

jgf..., The mint marks are usually on the reverse, and there are a few different types now, but some of the older ones are: C - Canberra S - Sydney M - Melbourne B - Brisbane A - Adelaide E - Eureka G - Gallipoli Just recently it was announced there would also be: H - Hobart P - Perth D - Darwin For several prior years there can be up to 5 or 6 mint marks, and just lately as many as 8 per year. I'll send you some scans of older coins with mint marks, but I don't have any of the new ones as I don't really collect them. I have splashed out a few times and got some with low mintages, but there are just too many variants to keep up with, and some are not exactly cheap. The RAM used to take a 'Portable Press' to different Cities in Australia and people could go along and push a button and a Pre Minted coin would then acquire a local 'Mint Mark', but the RAM ceased taking it around the country a couple years ago, so all the different Mint Marks are now stamped on the coins in Canberra, which to me is a bit off putting. It just seems a little deceitful somehow. There are only 2 Mints currently operating in Australia, RAM in Canberra and the Perth Mint. Some people collect the coins from Perth, but a lot don't, as although they are Legal Tender, they're often too expensive to buy. We do have collectors who just have to have every single $1 coin from both mints.

The output of the Royal Australian Mint in dollar coins for types metals and mintmarks is prodigious. I can't keep up with it. Some of them have a high catalogue value, eg. the 1992 Barcelona continuous milling silver proof, and the Victoria Cross commemorative. I was lucky to be given both.
These days, I just take uncirculated coins from circulation. This results In an incomplete set, because many types are NCLT, sold by the Mint to collectors at a large premium.
If you are interested in this series, just collect what you can, and what interests you. If you were able to collect all of them, you would have over a hundred coins, and you would be considered a fanatic for the series.

Like I said, "I can't keep up with it".
Don't despair. There is a huge variety of material to choose from within the series. To make sure that you are not paying too much for an issue you may be interested in, you really need a market guide. Values can range from $1 for a common circulation issue, up to $200 or so for a very scarce NCLT issue.
This series reminds me of Roman coinage, where every coin you come across has a different reverse type. In a sense, coinage was the Roman Empire's newspaper, because it kept the populace informed as to who was the current Emperor, and you had an idea of what was currently being commemorated, or what needed to be politically emphasised.
Like Yass has indicated, the above link IS very informative.

Mint marks aren't really for separate mints? Ok. I guess I'll try for one of each design, ignoring mint mark differences. I'll use blank pages or erase the labels on the existing pages and relabel or leave blank. Does this make for a workable collection? I'm talking only the 25 mm aluminum-bronze dollars.

Ok, so tell me if this list is correct for a set of 25 mm dollars.

XX indicates that I already have the coin. So, 1. Is this a reasonable collection to try for? 2. Are any of these ridicolous to obtain, i.e., more than say $50. U.S. each? 3. What should I expect the average cost of the NIFC coins to be?
I understand that this will keep me occupied for a couple years, not expecting to complete it overnight.

The most expensive would be the Victoria Cross $200 - $250, the Barcelona $1 $50-$60, the Navy $1 $50+
Some of the coins are only available in mint sets, e.g., the Baby Series. I think you also have to buy the two coins set ($1 and 20c) for Astronomy, Wool, and Planet Earth.

jgfindring: That's a mighty impressive effort, considering that you are U.S.based!
The Royal Australian Mint sells a lot of it's numismatic products through our Post Office system, and so makes collecting a far easier task.
Yass: Thanks for posting that additional list.

Ok, I guess I'm going back to my original goal of just the circulation issues.

It looks like a full list of what's available so far. According to the RAM Report for 2009/2010, there have been 3.9m 2010 Mob of Roos minted, so I'm assuming with that many, they will be going into circulation eventually and the mintage figure may very well change, but we'll have to wait till the next report comes out next September to verify that. NB. The 2003 suffrage coin has 2 varieties, both commonly available, with 2 slightly different sized reverses. Next lot I send you will include one of each. I think the 1999 coin also has 2 (or maybe 3) varieties of the size of the OBV, but not 100% sure about that one. A little research needed, I think. Will follow up on this later on. I haven't done the mint mark scans yet, but hope to get it done soon. I just realized that if you're only going for the circulation issues, the Mint Mark scans won't be needed, as they only appear on NCLT coins.
