Hello, I'm fairly new to coins been collecting for about a year or so and I came across this coin at an estate sale. The toning instantly made me think it was artificial but then I looked at PCGS true views and found several that were very similar that actually got graded. The toning does not take away from the brilliance and it has a shiny hourglass around the whole coin. It ranges from a rose color to purple/blue. When out of light it does look dark which is why I'm questioning it. The toning looks too perfect but then again I don't know how someone would artificially tone this well. Also it's in an NNC holder so even more questionable :P. Thanks for any thoughts on this. PS - The reverse isn't toned in any way Bought the coin for $35 and I did bring it into my local coin shop to have it tested and it passed the .999 test. to CCF , I can see how your sitting on a fence with this piece . I'm thinking if it would be artificial toning the colors would look more bright and harsh . This coin is light and soft , very subtle . My vote is Natural tone .  Edited by T-BOP

I don't question its authenticity or the nature of the toning. Looks natural to me. As far as the slab, I would just doubt the grade. At least it's giving it some protection, or you could break it out and put it in a capsule. In Memory of Crazyb0 12-26-1951 to 7-27-2020

Easy enough to artificially tone high MS ASE's by two different methods:- 1. Leave in the sun on a windowsill with the coin resting on a piece of white bleached (chlorinated) paper and allow to tone to the extent of what you wish 2. Careful heat toning. I have to admit:- I can't really tell the difference between A). natural toning B). bleached paper toning C). careful heat toning. But for me, that doesn't matter very much, because I prefer blast white, just as if it had just been ejected from the coining press. Nevertheless, I also admit:- I don't mind nicely toned high MS coins either, but I will just pay less for them, artificially or naturally toned. |
