1971 Kennedy Half Dollar Missing Planchet?

rkennedy1945 Valued Member United States 130 Posts	Posted 11/25/2022 11:36 am My son got this half in change today and needing advice on it. It appears to be missing a layer front and back. It only weighs about 10.7 grams. It is a 1971 Kennedy half. Pictures attached. All opinions are very appreciated. Report this Post to the Staff

coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 11/25/2022 2:31 pm It is slightly under weight, but the damage pretty much cancels out what the coin looked like when it was new. In order for this to be a Struck Through Grease coin, then the weight would be normal. So with it slightly under and damaged, it may have suffered torture with a sander, that lightened the coin. So pretty much a spender. (Reeds are missing, another clue that the coin was altered) Report this Post to the Staff
