Die wear. I seen this so often on the Jefferson nickel I don't even check them anymore unless they look fresh out of new roll.

2003-2005 are nickels I will pull from rolls and anything below 1964 that are in good shape. plus this year I have not seen a BU roll of 08's P or D.
there's a few die variety's in the 2004-2005's and the 2003 in good shape I guess now you can call it old style Jefferson nickel.
MD got to Ken Potter's site I am sure there's a list of Oh The Joy or type 2 2005 nickels there

Hi Seattle,

It is the result of die wear as suggested.

It's very common on five-cent coins.

I had a different thought, but either way it is not a doubled die. On the Building I feel it is Machine Doubling. But either way it is not a doubled die.
