Has anyone ever encountered a quarter with an x over the mintmark? I found one coin roll hunting this weekend and am not sure what to make of it. See attached photo. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks  |

@gsh, I haven't seen this exact thing before, so thanks for posting. Since I can't tell from this close-up pic, can you please indicate whether the X is above or below the surrounding surface of the coin? Thx. Also, it could be helpful to see overall images of both sides of the coin.

Pictures of obverse and reverse are attached. The X appear to have pushed into the coin surface and a bump is visible on the reverse.   |

Or someone hammered a Philips head screwdriver into the mint mark.

yep a Philips screwdriver and a hammer will do that - notice how the 'E' in America is bulging out on the reverse.

I would have thought maybe screwdriver, but the x is raised, it is not an indented x.

to the CCF Interesting coin ... but however this occurred it did not happen at the US Mint. There are numerous ways to alter/damage coins after they leave the mint ... your's is one of these. . To clarify what I meant by saying the x is raised. Overall the mintmark area is pushed down in the coin, but the actual x itself is in relief within the depression, the x is not incuse.

I just noticed in the close up picture that the outline of the bottom of the "D" is still visible in the X. It appears that what I have here is a uniquely damaged coin. Thanks to all who took the time to give input.
