Yes, Dearborn, the press would have had two adjacent die pairs operating in synchrony. If one of the die pairs strikes the planchet a micro-second before the other die pair, then you will see a slide zone develop. The smaller strike lacks a slide zone, suggesting that this impact was ever-so-slightly delayed relative to the larger strike.

Thanks Mike and all! That explanation of the strike is wonderful, and quite interesting to know this is one of the earliest known examples. Corrects my mis-assumption that it was not a saddle strike and provides very nice depth to the coin's backstory. I appreciate all that CCF provides and the member knowledge base here!
