Getting Kids Interested In Coinage/ Detecting

Howdy Guys,

Wondering how many of you have/ or would be able to recruit the next generation of hunters interested in treasure/ coin hunting? My thought would be to "drop" a couple of coins in a playground and have a community event with a couple of detectors, having the kids search for them and dig them out of the sand. Of course you'd not drop a 2011 Silver Eagle, however a few nickles, quarters or Pres. Dollars, maybe?

Finders/ Keepers...

I don't have a detector (mainly lack of mula) but notice that kids and youngsters can be interested in coins/ searching if approached appropriately.

My neighbor recently took his kids to an old tree that was suspected to be an old "gathering" place, close to their 1850 farmhouse and found a bunch of little old coins and spoons. The kids had a blast!

I deal with a lot of youngsters and am always surprised how little today's youth knows about coins and their heritage.

Ideas? Or am I just daydreaming?

My daughter has caught the collecting bug from just putting together a State Quarter album. But I like the idea of coin hunts, but using things like worn Indian Head cents and V/Bufflo nickels. Even wheat cents can be interesting to young'uns.
