Well yesterday I turned 16 and my brother got me a MD which I was extremely surprised and 110% excited for! I could not believe it when I saw it! UNfortunately I need two 9 volts to get her going but I as soon as I do she'll be sweeping the ground!

Its a Discovery 3300 by Bounty Hunter. I have heard alot about the Garrett on here so I figure someday I'll upgrade to that but for now I reckon this is a good start. Any advice from you veterans?

Happy belated birthday. I wish I received a metal detector for my BD. I'm sure you will have a lot of fun with it and you can save up all the coins you find with it and then upgrade to a better model. Don't forget that now you have to get your brother an extra nice BD gift on his BD. Here's wishing you Good Great hunting

If you don't have a pin pointer go to Harbor freight and get this one. It is cheap and I found it much better than the $140+ Vmax that one on line retailer sells. Here is the link to order one if you do not have a store nearby.

I have three words of wisdom for you

Congrats on the MD and happy belated birthday! As for tips; ask for permission before you hunt and always fill in your holes. Check out Youtube for videos on you MD and see if you can learn the tones of your detector. What I like to do is go in my backyard and find a spot that has no metal in the ground. Then I test my MD on what tone it makes for each item and at what discrimination level the item drops off at for a: penny, nickel, dime, quarter, silver jewelry, gold jewelry, pull tab, aluminum can, etc. Tim is right, a pin pointer works great and helps you locate an object fast. Oh yeah, and always carry spare batteries . Happy hunting!
Rest in Peace

Happy day-after Birthday rachums107. I hope you have lots of fun with it and find lots of treasures.

Your post made me do a bit of research. I always wanted a metal detector but never got one. When I was your age my parents thought I was nuts to want to go looking for treasures -- they weren't too interested in coins. So now, 40 years later at the age of 56, I still wish I had a MD.

After looking at a few.. including the one you got and the Garrett ... I think I might just go out and get one like yours. It just sounds like it would be a lot of fun.

Does anybody know if it is illegal to go digging around in a public park or forest. I live near a river and I sometimes think there's stuff to be dug up there.

I think the laws vary somewhat according to location. Where I live I need a permit for county property/parks at $45 and for city parks it's $40 for one year.

Rest in Peace

Thank you Sidekick-CA! I never heard of getting a permit for that so I will check on my city's and county's websites for that.
