Bought these in Madrid in the late 80's at the Plaza Mayor

Those are not the early Carlos y Juana reales - they are the late one.
Nevertheless, your coins are excellent :)
Check out the ones I posted lately, they are the earlier ones (there is no wave between the pillars, and the PLUS ULTRA moto is in a square)

I think he might have just meant "early Mexico" generically... like from "the early part of Spanish Mexico's history" not the "Early" vs. "Late" version of these particular C&J issues.

Thanks for the input. I meant that they were the earliest coins from the new world, not the earliest type from Mexico. I have seen photos of the earliest types but never have had the opportunity to buy one.

Thanks again, Mike

About this, I was wondering which mint was the first one top open.
Wasn't it Santo Domingo ? (their maravedies look crude)

MathieuMa.

I found in my Calico that there were some silver reals minted in Santo Domingo- a 10, 4, 2, 1, and 1/2 reals. Also copper 4 and 2 maravedis. I believe I have some of the copper pieces and will post them when I receive my USB microscope. They are very corroded and possibly not SD.

I have some of those santo domingo maravedies, I'll post them as well if you want :)
I'll gladly check yours out !

I was just wondering in which order settlements did open their mint.
From what I remember on history, I think Santo Domingo was the first place inhabited by spanish settlers ...
I love reading about this period, but I think I'll need a real history book to figure all this out ... and I'll need to find a special one about this period, as a generic history class book is usually too short on details.
(Gary Jennings tought me a lot - although it was more on the incas side)
