It seems a lot of people find silver in Coinstar machines... Do they reject silver coins and if so, why?

By weight. A 90% silver quarter weighs 6.25 grams, a clad quarter 5.67 grams. They are the same diameter - 24.3mm.

Edit: My bad, the English Pound coin was inside the machine, spinning on the rubber wheel. I told the clerk and she opened the machine and gave it to me.

I had such great luck with finding silver quarters and dimes in the Coinstar at my Credit Union back in the spring. Lately, I pop in and all I find are a few foreign coins, but now mainly only one penny at a time.

I usually find them in the trash next to the coin counter. Once there I picked me off a Silver Canadian quarter from there.

My "haul" since July. Not much. The best find was by my wife last week. The East Caribbean States one dollar is probably worth almost one dollar.

I can understand the foreign coins and the chewed up cents being rejected, but I wonder why the good cents, nickels and dimes were. Seems odd. Well, the Salvation Army will benefit from those.

No silver for a while now, but I keep looking.
