Interesting thread... Now I'm checking all the machines after grocery shopping and bank trips! My first machine I got a boring dime stuck to the chute, which I later threw in a change donate bin. Are there magnets to keep coins like those from slipping in?

I asked this question and was told the weight of silver coins are different...

The coinstars in my area seem to be in bad locations. I feel embarrassed looking at the ones in Safeway because they are in plain view; at Superstore it is in a congested area and the store is almost always busy, not to mention customers that generally watch their money.
I rarely ever go to Safeway, but I ran in and bought a couple of things. The new tills were having major problems, and I meanwhile saw someone dumping a jar of change into a Coinstar. I heard 2 coins clinking out the reject slot. I thought the guy was distracted by checking his phone but he still got his change. After the machine failed to take the coins 3 times, he took them. I would've offered him face value, but I didn't have change or confidence. If only the machine didn't remind people.
Seems to me that I would have to see someone using the machine to find anything more than a magnetic dime.

I made one of my rare finds from a British coinstar machine on 20th December, the day before I went to hospital (came out yesterday and now recuperating at home!) Not very exciting, but it's gone into my European spending money - a 2001 French 5 euro cents!

Dumped a box of nickels at CU and found these 2 waiting for me. I don't know much about Canadian coins, is there value to the Olympic hockey quarter on top of coolness? The pic was snapped quick, the coin in hand is shiny (not cloudy)

The Vancouver 2010 Olympic coins are very common. I put them back in circulation.

At Subway today, someone left a 1979 dime in the machine that dispenses your change. I guess someone didn't hear the single clang of a dime or something.
The coinstar at my local supermarket is being strange. The display is off, but someone left a crumpled receipt and an empty penny roll on the tray, which is evidence that it may have been on at some point.

Today at the Wal-mart in Bellingham I was looking at that machine where when you put a coin in it that goes through a whole bunch of mechanisms and finally lands in the bottom. I saw a 1941 nickel and an elongated penny with a native American type thing on it, I didn't get them because I would of needed to locate and ask the manager. I have stopped looking in coinstars and such because I did 1 time every month for more than a year and didn't find a single thing. Usually I wouldn't be able to let something like this go but when it comes down to it there's rare coins out there circulating around the whole country and I cant get them at all ever... unless I go to where they are and if that's in a public fountain full of coins then the rare dated coin shouldn't be in there in the first place so I don't care if security bans me.

I got a silver nickel back from my own dump tonight.

I was dumping halves and $500 worth of nickels at the only bank that has a coinstar type machine and at the end it kept kicking out the same nickels I had been throwing back. One of them was a 1943P I must have missed.
