I guess after this, many collector's wife will start holding a metal detector waiting for their husband to come home from work every night.

The mint charges your CC when they ship. Unlikely that they will ship before the end of Dec.

Not sure if this already came up in these 27 pages, but did it occur to anyone that the expression "hand picked" means the mint can ship any grade they want at their discretion, and can exceed the 30,000 limit if they need to...and if they get orders for 10,000 of each 1912-1913-1914 $5 coins or 20,000 of each $10 coins, all they have to do is dip into the "melting pot" to fill orders? I've already committed $587 to a 1914 $5, and I'll be VERY surprised if its better than MS-60.

@malibu while the mint can ship just about "any" grade...i doubt they will ship anything below AU especially since these coins sat in a bag, uncirculated. As for the quantity, there is no way they are releasing more than 30,000 total. The coins already sold out...so if what you said was true, they would still be available. Plus the mint specificaly stating they are only putting out total 30,000...makes them kind of liable for anything otherwise.

Firstly, I'll say that I'm in no way an expert in coin grading but I find these two definitions, found in an on-line article, to be very interesting:
(MS-65) Mint State Choice - Uncirculated with strong luster, very few contact marks, excellent eye appeal. Strike is above average. (MS-68) Mint State Premium Quality - Uncirculated with perfect luster, no visible contact marks to the naked eye, exceptional eye appeal. Strike is sharp and attractive. I added the bolding on the words choice and premium because those are the same two words used by Mint reps to describe the two types of coins offered. Hand Selected = Choice Premium Hand Selected = Premium
I too would be surprised if the HS were above MS-60 but is it out of the question that they would be MS-65? If they are, 500 might just be a steal of a deal.
I guess this is all just spitballing until some are actually graded.

The mint doesn't care for numismatic grading companies or actual number grades, as it states on the disclamer for the coins. Therefore as I stated before, I think they will go based on pure eye appeal and not concern themselves with the nitty of the grading companies

I'm not sure if anyone noticed, but there are high-res images of both hand select and premium for every year on the mint ftp. The hand select ones look to be at least AU-58 IMO, maybe MS-60 to MS-62. Here is the link to see the images ftp://communications:RCM2007@ftp.mint.ca/Personally I nearly grabbed a 1914 $5 but cancelled at the last moment. EDIT: If anyone is wondering where I found the link, it's from the official news release of the coins on the mint website here http://www.mint.ca/store/news/a-nat...out+the+Mint

I've missed the boat on all the $5 coins..... stupid delay from the Credit Card processing of my Credit Union (take them too long to process my payment). Now, out of the remaining 4 options, which would you think is the safest bet? Would the Hand Selected 1914 a better choice since since it's the last year (higher chance of being less circulated. Note: The coin were about 100 years but only been in the vault for 75 years, so there are 25yrs gap that can imply they have been moving/transferring OR circulating). Another factor, according to my Whitman "A Guide Book of Canadian Coins and Tokens" by James A. Haxby, mintage of the 14 is about 9K less than the 13 and the price of the 14 is slightly higher from EF to AU and about $150 to $200 higher in MS grades.
What are your thought on the 14 vs 13 of the remaining 4 options?
