Quote: @bekiz I like that coin , how much do they sell for? You show alot of N Korea coins, does South Korea make coins? the coin with the same dinosaurs dated 2001 was sold for 115 on ebay. As of South Korea - they make coins as well, but the most I've seen are commemorating 1986 Olympics made of 925 silver selling at spot. But I haven't seen on auction anything interesting. Their country must be able to mine silver & gold.. it's their numismatic items. as of import - their supporting counter-party is China ... I think that's where all the DPRK import comes from. The mintage for most of these coins is 5000 or less

Today was pretty cool. On a whim, I bought into a poker site I play at and did very well. Turned $40 into $100 within an hour so I cashed out, got my $ and bought a 1945 dos peso & $1 fv silver coins from APMEX ebay. I'm looking at it like it was $40, so I feel like I did good. I'll try and snap some pics of my current collection with my latest buys.

That's one very cool coin, bekiz! As subjects go, a North Korean dinosaur commemorative coin is pretty darn unique all on it's own. But, in classic North Korean style, they make the coin EVEN MORE interesting because they chose to commemorate the most famous dinosaur that NEVER ACTUALLY EXISTED. Brontosaurus was misidentified in the early 20th century as as an entirely new dinosaur (they mistakenly assembled the bones of multiple dinosaurs into one animal). By 1995, when this coin was minted, the international scientific community had long realized that Brontosaurus never existed and that the remains originally discovered (once correctly assembled) belonged to the dinosaur we know today as Apatosaurus. You just can't make this stuff up.

CW, that's good info! Looks like they made the same coin twice with "mythical" animal )) one is mine and another you can find on ebay dated 2001 if memory serves me correct So people who made the coin look like this never cared about archaeology ... anyway there's no world outside DPRK :) BTW, checked Krause and looks like they have great number of these nonexistent animals on coins

B, I'm truly jealous of that dinosaur coin. I got hooked on dinosaurs in 3rd grade and never really lost the passion. I've tried to win the one you have a couple of times over the years, with no luck. There's also a 1995 China 10 yuan Pterosaur coin that I really want, but the last one I saw on ebay went for $500+. I do have a $4 Canada T-Rex fossil coin, but they're fairly easy to come by. I did win this, recently.

Quote: BTW, checked Krause and looks like they have great number of these nonexistent animals on coins B, That surprised me too. I found some 21st century coins from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sierra Leone, Republic of Benin, and some other nations featuring the Brontosaurus. Though I was having a bit of fun earlier at North Korea's expense, I don't really think the creation of these coins is some grievous error. If anything it just shows how a discovery or an idea can really capture the imagination of humans across the planet. Congratulations on adding this interesting coin to your collection!
