Went through my first box (nickels) results are:

297 - 99.9% Nickel
6 - "1945-2005 V" Nickel
8 - 12 Sided Nickel
1 - 1942 Nickel
1 - 1940 Nickel
3 - 1991 Nickel
3 - 2000-P Nickel

92 - US Nickels
1 - 1956-D US Nickle
1 - 1954-S US Nickle
1 - "Ocean In View" US Nickle

Should I be looking for anything else? IE: I happened to see both 2003 nickels (new and old effigy), is it worth it to keep one (or both)?

Picked up 30 rolls of pennies from the bank today. Also got some from relatives. Went through all but 7 rolls (saving those for another post because based on the ends I think the finds will be incredible).
Finds from the 23 rolls and bag from relatives: 1940, 1941, 1943, 1946, 1949, 1952, 1953(3), 1955(2), 1957(2), 1959(3). Also found a 2009 US, 2 wheat cents, and a 2006 Barbados one cent.

Nice finds soulchief. Hopefully you can find some more pennies to hunt.

Of the 7 rolls I was saving 1 was "normal" and two were all Canadian from the 1930's.

Four rolls were marked "USA" and the finds were as follows: 1910(3), 1914, 1917(4), 1917D, 1917S, 1918(6), 1919(4), 1920(6), 1920S(2), 1924, 1924D, 1925, 1926(2), 1926D, 1927, 1928(3), 1934(3), 1935(3), 1936(4), 1936D, 1937(2), 1938(2), 1938D, 1938S, 1939(3), 1940(7), 1940D, 1940S, 1941(12), 1941D, 1942(10), 1942D, 1943, 1944(10), 1944D(3), 1945(9), 1945D(2), 1946(8), 1946D(2), 1946S, 1947S, 1948(2), 1949, 1950(2), 1950D, 1951, 1951D, 1952, 1952D(2), 1953D, 1954, 1955D(2), 1956, 1956D(2), 1958.

Five were hole fillers which brings my LWC count to 107/140.

The two Canadian rolls were pure 1930's (the 1929 was in with the wheat cents). Finds were as follows: 1929, 1930(2), 1932(17), 1933(9), 1934(8), 1935(2), 1936(3), 1937(13), 1938(19), 1939(31). Also found a 1956 Canadian in with the US coins.

Total George V small cents found today: 42 (which dwarfs my previous 15 total found). Grand total found to date: 57

Best find by far was a 1924D Wheat cent in about VF-20. Mintage of 2,520,000.

^^^ Finding a George V in a box is a great result. ^^^ I just got really lucky today. Although I wonder what happened to all the Canadian small cents from the 1920's. Only because I found so many from the 30's and only one from the 20's tucked in with the wheat cents. When I looked at the rolls I was so happy I went up to 3 bank employees and interrupted their conversation to show them the George V and Wheat cent enders. In my state of numismatic euphoria I wasn't thinking clearly. They looked at me like I had a second head. Then one of them said: "Why do you even have pennies?" They were very confused and seemed to think what I was showing them was a bad thing. I hope that doesn't affect me getting more pennies from that bank...it was kind of an oh s*** moment the second I saw their reactions. Live and learn I guess.

The pennies are certainly drying up but what is left out there seems to have a higher percentage of older coins.

Yep, i'll always have my rural bank though because they said they never ship out the pennies. The 3 banks I went to all said they ship them out as soon as they come in. I assume when they say "ship them out" they mean back to the mint to be melted.

are there any key dates to look for? coming from a US CRHer. I've been keeping the canadian pennies I come across when looking for other things. My finds the other day 1-1964, 1-1968, 1-1994, and 1-(1952-2002). I have a bag full at home and don't know what to look for.

The key dates for this series are 1922-1926. Here are the mintage numbers (1920-2012). http://www.mint.ca/store/mint/learn....UwRML-Qo6P8

I would also keep an eye out for varieties like 1985 pointed 5, 2006p and 2006 magnetic no mint logo. Checking the monarch on the obverse is an easy way of telling if you've found something good. For hunting in the US I would say young Elizabeth II - Good, George VI - Great, and George V - Incredible. Of these, 1964 (last year of young Elizabeth II) will be the most common due to a relatively high mintage. 2012 and 1990 would also be nice finds.

What banks are people finding penny boxes at? I've only found them at one small credit union that has 3 branches (they don't bother shipping them off). I've contact a larger credit union and they say they ship them away right away. I've tried RBC and they say the same thing.

I've used google maps to find ~65 credit unions around me that I'll slowly check. But wondering if people are finding them at other banks like CIBC, TD, RBC, Bank of Montreal, Scotiabank, etc.

I think it is dependant more on the branch and in some cases the individual(s) you are dealing with. I have only tried getting pennies at 3 banks (1 TD and 2 RBC). The TD after checking with management advised me they were not able to give out pennies. I did however open a free savings account there to use their coin counting machine for free. One of the RBC's I've established a good relationship with. To the point I believe they would call me before shipping the pennies out but I go weekly so they haven't had to. In that branch, they checked with management and the pickup of pennies seems supported. It saves them room in their small vault and cost in shipping them out. The other RBC is a larger branch and I deal with one particular teller every time at their separate business window. She is a very nice older lady and is very encouraging although I do worry that management may notice/step in and put an end at this branch.

Thanks, I was thinking the larger banks (like TD, RBC) would be the hardest to get pennies from. I thought about opening a TD account just for the coin machine but haven't done it yet. I just ordered 3k flat wrapper rolls (1k penny, 1k nickle, 1k dimes) for ~$6 per 1k so maybe after I've gone through rolling 3k rolls, I might be tired of rolling them and open a TD account.

Edit: Do you pay fees for the TD account? There's so much fine print on their website it's a little confusing. If I opened an account with them, I don't think I'd want to keep anything in the account.

I just started hunting today, and I got really lucky.
Went to CIBC and got 5 rolls of nickels, got a 1953 and a 1964 Nickel
About 30% of them were nickel coins, not bad.I sorted them on the bus home and when I was done I stopped at a BMO in a business district.
Teller got really mad for not wrapping 350 nickels but put up with me because I am so young. I got $100 worth of quarters, found 1 1968 silver quarter and $20 worth of USD quarter, 75% were State Quarters, keeping those to exchange for CAD because USD is above par. Got rid of the useless quarters at TD Canada Trust also on the way home, wen to convenience store and got 2 rolls of quarters. My first quarter I took out was 2 1968 quarters.

No soulchief, I got the vouchers at the TD coin machine and the rates a free for personal clients, 3% for business clients and 8% for non clients. Reccomend you get a TD account, they have long hours

There are TD free accounts, like everyday savings and high interest savings. You can get cash from thhe vouchers you print at the coin machines
